Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbaş gave the start of the 33rd Eurasia
marathon on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus Bridge. In this
tough run athletes passed Eyüp and Bakırköy and reached Sultanahmet
via coast road.
This year's silver category finish was before the Egyptian obelisk
at Horse Square. The winner, who covered the 42,195 meter lap is
last year's champion Vincent Kiplagat. Kenyan athlete out-run his
Ethiophian rivals in 2 hr 10 min 59 sec. Tariku Jufar came second
and Tsegay Gebreselassie came third.
In women, Ethiophian ladies ruled the marathon by winning the first
three titles. Last year's second Alemitu Abera was happy to come
first with 2 hr 27 min 56 sec this year. Her fellow citizens Fatuma
Sato came second and Tsega Gelaw came third.
A total of 1 million dollars have been distributed to successful
runners. The winners received $50 thousand each. Ethiophian
athletes also won the 15 km lap held as part of the Eurasia
marathon organization.
In men's atsedu tsegay came first with 44 min 5 sec. The best
Turkish athlete was Ali Haydar Tekgöz, who came 5th. In women's,
Sosena Gezaw came first; Turkish ladies Binnaz Uslu and Özlem Kaya
followed her lead. Heavy rain and cold weather did not stop
Istanbulians, a huge crowd attended the 8 km long public run.
More than 100 thousand people joined the organization.
